Information Equity

Why sign language?

Text alone does not add up to information equity

Learning a second language is never the same as speaking your mother tongue. Even after years of study, few people grasp meaning as quickly or express detail as precisely as a native speaker. The same is true for deaf people whose primary language is sign language.

So when information is delivered to deaf audiences in text only, a language gap can turn into a comprehension gap. In public services that affect people's rights and safety, that risk of misunderstanding has to be reduced.

Common situations include:

01

Exhibition guides in museums and galleries

02

Daily announcements of transit, weather and other public information

03

Understanding emergency alerts the moment they are issued

She learned sign language for her sister

Ritsu is a 16-year-old virtual sign language ambassador. Her younger sister is deaf, and she began learning sign language so the two of them could really talk. Now she does the same thing on screen: helping more people read sign language, and helping more information reach deaf audiences.
